EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - East Stroudsburg grabbed an early lead and held on for a 12-7 victory over Lafayette on Wednesday at Metzgar Field, despite a 4-for-5 performance from Vince D'Angelis.
RBI doubles in the first inning by Bryan Yagel and Jeremy Miller helped give East Stroudsburg a 3-0 lead and some room to work for starting pitcher Ryan Amey.
Lafayette got two runs back in the bottom of the third inning. Adam Rosenberg drove home Tye Gonser with a sac fly to right. D'Angelis recorded the first of his four hits on the day with an RBI single that brought Lafayette within one, 3-2.
East Stroudsburg took control of the game with five runs in the top of the next inning. Chad Waelchli plated the first two runs of the inning with a bases-loaded single. Miller collected two more RBI with a single through the left side to give ESU an 8-2 lead.
Lafayette cut the lead to five (8-3) in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Craig Alexander doubled home Jason Boyd who had reached base with a lead-off double.
East Stroudsburg closed the door with a four-spot in the top of the seventh inning. Three of those runs came on a three-run home run by Len Makarczyk. The 390-foot homer to right center gave the Warriors a 12-3 lead.
Lafayette scored four runs over the next inning and a half. The Leopards struck for three in the top of the seventh. Rosenberg and Boyd each connected for RBI singles and the Leopards added a run on an error to make it 12-6. Lafayette scored its final run in the eighth inning. Jason Moll belted a double to left to score Adam Bucci who had reached with a lead-off single.
Adam Swavely (1-0) got the win for East Stroudsburg. He threw four innings of relief, allowing nine hits and five runs on three strikeouts. Lafayette starter Drew Moyer was tagged with the loss. Moyer threw 2.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, a walk and two strikeouts.
Lafayette (2-3) returns to action on Saturday when the Leopards host Cornell at noon in the first game of a doubleheader.
