PRINCETON, N.J. (www.lafayette.edu) - Reigning Patriot League champion Lafayette opened the season with an 18-7 loss to Princeton, the No. 2 ranked women's lacrosse team in the nation.
Princeton raced to a 4-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Erin Gallagher got the Leopards on the scoreboard with her first goal of the season at 6:53. Princeton responded with three straight goals at 12:34, 14:18 and 14:36 to take a 7-1 lead.
Heather McClelland took the game over for the next six minutes, scoring at 14:36 on an assist from Jennifer Stone and at 16:14 and 20:32 on unassisted tallies.
Princeton scored two more goals before the end of the half to hold the momentum and a 9-4 lead. The Tigers outscored Lafayette 9-3 in the second half with Gallagher registering two goals and McClelland one.
McClelland, the Patriot League's 2001 Offensive MVP, led the way for the Leopards with four goals in the game. Gallagher finsihed with three. Stone managed all three of Lafayette's assists.
Leela Strong spent the entire game in goal for Lafayette and finished with 16 saves.
Meghan McInnis (16:14) and Sarah Kolodner (43:56) split time in goal for Princeton and combined for five saves.
Lafayette (0-1) plays the final game of a two-game Ivy League swing on Friday when it travels to face Penn at 4 p.m. The road does not get any easier as Lafayette remains on the road against Connecticut on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Leopards open at home on March 16, hosting St. Joseph's at 1 p.m.
