WORCESTER, Mass. - The Lafayette women's lacrosse team inched closer to clinching the top spot in the league with a 10-7 win over Holy Cross on Saturday in Worchester, Mass. The win improved Lafayette to 4-0 in the Patriot League while the Crusaders fell to 2-4.
Lafayette dominated the first 16 minutes of the game jumping out to a 5-0 lead on goals by Stone (2), Stephanie Tinney, Fallon Cunningham and Kim Maron. HC's Justine Reeber netted the Crusaders lone goal of the first half at 18:19 to cut the lead to 5-1.
Maron opened the second half scoring at 27:40 to give Lafayette a 6-1 advantage. Holy Cross responded just 0:23 seconds later when Katie Britt tallied her first goal the afternoon to make the score 6-2. Lafayette scored three unanswered goals to push its' lead to 9-2. Britt converted a pass from teammate Erin Rowse at 25:47 to end the Leopards' run. Rowse then cut the LC lead to 9-4 when she found the back of the net less than three minutes later.
The Leopards' Heather McClelland put Lafayette ahead 10-4 when she scored with 9:25 remaining. The Crusaders scored three straight goals from Britt, Jana Tencate and Kerry Daly to end the scoring at 10-7.
Senior goalie Leela Strong stopped 15 shots for the Leopards. Kellaigh Malangone made 13 saves in net for the Crusaders.
