EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette's first night game in 10 seasons and the first 12-game regular season schedule in more than 100 seasons highlight the 2002 Leopards' football schedule. Lafayette opens the 2002 season by hosting three games, starting with Monmouth on Sept. 7 in a non-league contest at Fisher Field.
"This is once again a very challenging schedule," said Frank Tavani, who enters his third season as Lafayette's head football coach. "We need to put ourselves in many of the same situations we did last year, but just make the key plays to come out on top. Opening up a week earlier with Monmouth allows us to play a non-league game prior to facing Patriot League competition and allows for a more complete preseason schedule."
The Leopards' Sept. 7 opener will be the first-ever meeting between Lafayette and Monmouth on the gridiron. The Hawks were 7-3 in 2001, defeating Patriot League member Towson 24-17. After facing Monmouth in the season opener, the Leopards open Patriot League play by hosting Towson on Sept. 14 for RCN Youth Day. Then Ivy League power Pennsylvania visits Fisher Field on Sept. 21 during Lafayette's Family Weekend.
Lafayette's first road contest of the 2002 season is scheduled for Sept. 28 when the Leopards travel to Princeton for a 7 p.m. kickoff. It will be Lafayette's first night game since the 1993 season when the Leopards played at Buffalo in a 7 p.m. start and returned with a 29-15 victory.
The Leopards open the month of October with two non-league games, traveling to Duquesne on Oct. 5 and then Columbia on Oct. 12.
After returning home to host Patriot League foe Georgetown in Lafayette's Homecoming Day contest on Oct. 19, the Leopards face three straight Patriot League road games. An Oct. 26 battle at Fordham is followed by a Nov. 2 contest at Colgate and a Nov. 9 showdown at Bucknell.
Finishing off the Leopards' 2002 regular season schedule are home Patriot League contests vs. Holy Cross on Nov. 16 and vs. Lehigh on Nov. 23 in the 138th meeting of college football's most-played rivalry.
This is Lafayette's first 12-game regular season schedule since the 1901 season. The Leopards went 9-3 that season and shut out six opponents, including Lehigh by a 41-0 margin. Because of the way the calendar falls in the years 2002, 2003, 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2019, the NCAA has permitted college football programs to schedule a 12th contest in those seasons.
Lafayette concluded its 120th season of college football and second under Tavani this past fall. The Leopards held a lead in each Patriot League game during the 2001 season, losing four contests by 10 points or less. The Leopards return 13 starters and 40 letterwinners.
