PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette softball team dropped a doubleheader at St. Joseph's by scores of 18-7 and 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon at East Norriton Field.
In game one, St. Joseph's erupted for 11 runs in the opening inning, roughing up Leopard starter Megan Longo. The Hawks followed that with seven more runs in the second inning to build an 18-0 cushion.
Lafayette rallied in the fourth, scoring four runs of its own to slice into the lead, making it 18-4. The Leopards then scored three more in the fifth inning before the game was called due to the eight-run rule.
For the Leopards, Diane Mitchell hit the team's first home run of the season, a three-run blast in her only plate appearance. Megan Davis finished the game 2-for-3 with one RBI, while Jackie Fitzgerald was 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Pitching dominated game two of the doubleheader, as Lauren Belowich scattered six hits over six innings and allowed just one earned run for the Leopards.
Becky Foley belted her first homer of the season to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead in the top half of the third inning.
Saint Joseph's responded with two runs in its half of the third, with Cara Deldeo recording the only RBI for the Hawks.
Lafayette (2-8) hosts Pennsylvania for a doubleheader in its home opener on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Metzgar Field.
