LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette softball team lost a doubleheader at Rider by scores of 7-3 and 3-0 on Tuesday afternoon in a non-league contest.
In game one, Rider scored two runs on two hits in the bottom of the first inning to open up a 2-0 lead.
Lafayette chipped away by getting a run in the top half of the second. Mara Shainheit led off with an infield single and stole second. Becky Foley then lined a single to left field to score Shainheit and make the score 2-1.
Rider added two more runs in the bottm of the third, when Jamie Farley blasted a two-run homer to left, putting the Broncos ahead 4-1. Rider scored another run in the fourth when Kristin Kenavan singled and later scored on an error, giving Rider a 5-1 lead.
The Leopards attempted to rally in the top half of the fifth. Gianna Lopreato got thing started with a single and then Tara Martinho reached on an error. Shainheit then belted a two-run double to left center to bring Lafayette within 5-3.
Shainheit and Meghan Davis each finished 2-for-3 to lead the Leopards, while Foley registered a hit and an RBI. Lafayette left six runners on base in the opener.
Jackie Fitzgerald suffered the pitching loss for Lafayette, surrendering nine hits and seven runs in six innings of work. Rider's Maddy Boulden earned the win, giving up eight hits and three runs in five innings.
In game two, Heather Beintema pitched a complete game two-hitter to lead the Broncos. Davis and Martinho collected the only two hits for the Leopards.
Lauren Belowich was the hard-luck loser in game two for Lafayette, allowing eight hits and three runs while amassing eight strikeouts.
Lafayette (3-13) returns to action at Metzgar Field on Wednesday when the Leopards conclude their weekend series with Army that was postponed due to rain. The doubleheader will start at 2:30 p.m.
