EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette football team had a special guest for its practice on Tuesday.
Tony Giglio '74, who ended his career as Lafayette's all-time leading rusher with 2,519 yards, paid a visit to Metzgar Fields. Giglio was recently diagnosed with brain cancer and is just four weeks removed from brain surgery. Fourth-year head coach Frank Tavani invited Giglio to observe practice and speak to the team.
"It was nice to have him out here," Tavani said. "I think he was an inspiration for our guys. Our kids are sore and tired right now, but I think for them to see everything he has been through and still have a positive attitude got our kids excited."
In 1972, Giglio turned in Lafayette's first 1,000-yard rushing season, finishing the year with 1,204 yards. Giglio again eclipsed the 1,000-yard barrier as a senior in 1973, tallying 1,078 yards. The Associated Press named Giglio an honorable mention All-American as a junior and third-team All-American as a senior.
Giglio was a member of the Maroon Club Hall of Fame induction class of 1981-82.
The Leopards continue two-a-day practices on Wednesday, with the morning session slated for 8:15 a.m. and the afternoon for 4:15 p.m. The Leopards open the 2003 season at home against Marist on Sept. 6.
