BALTIMORE, Md. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette and UMBC played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer on Sunday in the title game of the adidas Kickoff Classic in Baltimore.
UMBC was awarded the tournament championship based on goal differential. The Retrievers won their first match of the tournament over Colgate 4-0, while Lafayette defeated Robert Morris 2-1 on Friday.
UMBC held the edge on shots, 10-4, and corner kicks, 7-1, but Lafayette goalkeeper Mike Tortora (Willington, Conn./E.O. Smith) made two saves to preserve the tie.
Three Leopards were named to the Kickoff Classic All-Tournament team: forward Jamie Mullarkey (Cramlington, England/Cramlington), midfielder Nick Caiella (Piscataway, N.J./Pingry School) and defender Tom Wajda (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia).
Sunday's match marked the second-ever meeting between Lafayette and UMBC. The first time the schools met was in the 1999 NCAA Play-In game in Easton, in which the Leopards and Retrievers played 150 scoreless minutes. UMBC won that contest on penalty kicks.
Lafayette (1-0-1) plays host to the Puma Soccer Classic next Friday and Sunday, Sept. 5 and 7. The Leopards take the field Friday at 7 p.m. against Hartford at Metzgar Fields.
