Lafayette Women Drop Heartbreaker to Army, 59-56

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Despite a team high 15 points by sophomore Kristin Doherty the Lafayette women's basketball team lost a nail-biter to Army, 59-56, on Tuesday.

Army took an early lead, going up by five 13-8 at the 11:28 mark. Lafayette was able to keep the game close, and tied it up at 13 on a Doherty three pointer with 8:35 left to play in the first half. The Black Knights Shavonne Holden converted three free throws to put Army back up by three with 6:39 left in the half, but a lay up by the Leopards' Tricia Indoe at 4:03 put Lafayette up by one.

The Leopards led for the rest of the half, and hit the locker room ahead five, 28-23.

Lafayette returned to the floor and continued its streak, going up by 10 points on two free throws by Elecia Kruise with 17:47 on the clock.

For Army, Holden capitalized on a Katie Macfarlane rebound and assist at 13:07 to get the Black Knights back within two. Lafayette's Kara Stetler converted a jump shot at 12:45, and a quick steal by Lindsay Myers and assist to Shannon Dorsey put the Leopards back on top by six with 12:01 remaining in the game.

Lafayette was able to go ahead by 10 once again with 9:01 left to play, but Army scored nine unanswered points to close the margin back to two with 6:28 on the clock. A three-pointer by the Black Knights Haley Edwards, her only points of the game, put Army up by a basket with 4:50 left to play.

The Leopards were able to pull within one in the final minute of play, but Macfarlane converted two free throws with 22 seconds left on the clock to put Army up by three for good.

Lafayette's Colleen Fitzpatrick scored 13 points and had seven rebounds for the Leopards. Brianne Welte led the team with 10 rebounds. Myers and Kruise each finished with eight points apiece.

Macfarlane led all players with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Lindsay Brent added 12 and Holden scored 11 for the Black Knights (9-5, 1-1).

Lafayette (0-13, 0-2) will be back in action on the road as the team travels to Harvard on Jan. 15 and will continue Patriot League play at Holy Cross on Jan. 17.
