EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette remained unbeaten in Patriot League play with a 76-40 victory over Army in Kirby Sports Center on Wednesday.
The Leopards (11-4 overall, 2-0 Patriot League) are off to their first 2-0 start in league play since the 1999-2000 season and are also 8-0 at home this season.
The 40 points allowed were the fewest by a Lafayette team since a 47-40 win at Colgate on Jan. 2, 1985. The 36-point difference was Lafayette's largest margin of victory all-time over Army.
After Lafayette opened a 10-0 lead in the early going, Army put together an 18-3 run in just over five minutes to take an 18-13 lead with 10:06 left in the half.
Senior guard Winston Davis then sandwiched a pair of three-pointers around a Pat Betley triple, accounting for all the points in a 9-0 Leopard run, to send the Leopards back in front, 22-18. Army (3-11, 0-2) scored five straight, but Justin DeBerry connected from beyond the arc to put Lafayette in front for good, 25-23. Davis banked in a running, 35-footer at the first-half buzzer to stretch the lead to 34-25 at the break.
The Leopards outscored Army 30-4 over the first 12 minutes of the second half to blow the game open. The lead swelled to as many as 38 points as the Leopards out-scored the Black Knights 42-15 in the second stanza.
Lafayette held a 37-27 edge on the boards and forced 23 Black Knight turnovers.
Josh Wilson led Army with 19 points, 15 in the first half alone. Sean O'Keefe was also in double figures with 10 points.
Davis led the Leopards with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including 5-of-7 from three. His five three-pointers are a new career high. Mike Farrell was 5-of-5 from the floor for 11 points, while DeBerry and Marcus Harley added 10 apiece.
Lafayette returns to action on Saturday, visiting three-time defending league champion Holy Cross at 3:15 p.m.
