JERSEY CITY, N.J. (www.lafayette.edu) - St. Peter's used a 24-3 run to pull away from a 33-33 deadlock and defeated Lafayette, 81-64, in non-conference men's basketball on Tuesday night.
The Peacocks (1-1) scored the first 11 points of the game but Lafayette responded with a 19-3 spurt behind eight points from senior Sean Knitter to give the Leopards (1-1) their biggest lead of the night, 19-14, with 8:11 left in the first half.
Keydren Clark, the nation's leading returning scorer, made just one field goal in the first 19:57, but his three-pointer with three seconds left on the clock gave St. Peter's a 30-29 edge at the intermission.
The Peacocks started their second-half run with 16:48 remaining, and a three-pointer from freshman Bilal Abdullah was Lafayette's only scoring until the 10:31 mark.
A three by sophomore Jamaal Hilliard pulled the Leopards to within nine with 5:34 remaining, but the Peacocks hit key shots down the stretch. St. Peter's forced Lafayette into 23 turnovers and only gave the basketball up 10 times to earn the win.
Clark was just 2-of-9 from long range but still finished with 22 points to lead all scorers. Terrance Watkins had 19 and Kaimondre Owens netted all of his 14 in the second half.
Knitter led Lafayette with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Abdullah scored 11 and Hilliard and Marcus Harley each hit for nine.
Lafayette will christen the new Kirby Sports Center hardwood on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 1 p.m. as the Leopards host Princeton.
