WEST POINT, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - Despite a game high 24 points by senior Colleen Fitzpatrick, the Lafayette women's basketball team fell to Army, 62-55 in Patriot League action on Wednesday evening.
The Black Knights opened up the scoring in the first half on two free throws by Katie Macfarlane just 10 seconds into the game. The two shots from the charity stripe sparked a 13-0 run before Fitzpatrick scored the Leopards first points with 14:50 on the clock.
Lafayette was able to cut the lead to nine, 15-6 on a lay up by Brittney Rothweiler with 12:08 remaining to play.
Army, led by two straight baskets by Macfarlane, built the lead back up to 14 with just under nine minutes left in the half. The Leopards' Lindsay Myers capitalized on a fast break lay up with 4:57 on the clock to cut the lead to 10.
Rothweiler hit a jump shot with 31 seconds remaining to get within 7, but the Black Knights' Megan Flynt hit a jumper of her own with just eight seconds on the clock to give Army a 34-25 lead at the break.
Returning from halftime, the Leopards were able to get within five, 38-33 at the 16:14 mark after Fitzpatrick scored Lafayette's first eight points of the second stanza.
Sophomore Kristin Doherty hit a three pointer at 9:03 to pull the Leopards within two, 50-48 and converted the first of two free throws less than a minute later to cut the lead to one with just over eight minutes to play.
With 4:08 remaining in the game, Flynt missed two free throws, giving Lafayette another shot to make a comeback. With just over two minutes of game time left, Fitzpatrick scored from the paint to get within five, 58-53. However, strong foul shooting by Haley Edwards and Lindsay Brent in the last minute of regulation kept Army ahead until the final buzzer.
Fitzpatrick led all scorers and also recorded a team high eight rebounds. Myers and Doherty each added 10 points for the Leopards.
Army (13-9, 5-4) was led by Macfarlane with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Brent added 15 points for the Black Knights. Shavonne Holden chipped in with 10 points in the contest.
Lafayette (0-22, 0-9) returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 14 as they host Patriot League foe Holy Cross in Kirby Sports Center as part of a double header at 1 p.m.
