HAMILTON, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) -The Lafayette women's basketball team attempted to gain its elusive first win, but came up short as they were defeated 65-41 by the Colgate Raiders on Saturday afternoon.
Colgate opened up scoring at the 19:48 mark on a three-pointer by Malissa Burke. The Raiders were able to keep Lafayette scoreless until 17:24, when a Kara Stetler jump shot got the Leopards on the board.
A three-point play by Colgate's Emily Braseth at 10:41 put the Raiders up by nine, 17-8. The Leopards were able to battle back, getting the score within two, 17-15, on layup by Stetler with just under six minutes left to play.
With 1:36 remaining in the half, Lafayette's Kristin Doherty hit a shot to tie the game at 23. However, Colgate's Meghan Curtin capitalized on two free throws at 1:21 to help lead the Raiders to a six-point lead at halftime, 30-24.
Returning from the break, Colgate went on a 13-0 run to put the Leopards down by 18, 42-24, with 16:29 on the clock. Lafayette's Colleen Fitzpatrick broke the drought for the Leopards, scoring their next seven points.
At 13:01, Tricia Indoe hit a shot from the paint to get the Leopards within nine, but that was as close as they could get for the rest of the game. Colgate built up a 22 point lead on two free throws by Emily Damuth with 3:03 left to play before Fitzpatrick scored the last of her 13 points at 1:39 to get Lafayette back within 20, 61-41.
With only 30 seconds left in the game, the Raider's Carly Brescacin converted two shots from the charity stripe to put Colgate up by the final margin of 24.
Colgate (14-7, 6-2) was lead by Curtin with 16 points. Braseth added 13 for the Raiders.
Fitzpatrick led Lafayette (0-21, 0-8), while Doherty added 11 points of her own. Indoe led all players with a career high 11 rebounds in the contest.
The Leopards will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 11 as they travel to Army to take on the Black Knights at 5:30 p.m.
