EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - After a no-call on Lafayette's offensive end with the score even at 61, Matt Betley caught Alvin Reed from behind and fouled the Colgate junior with 1.0 seconds left. Reed made the first and missed the second to give the Raiders a 62-61 win in Patriot League play on Sunday afternoon.
Reed had the assist on Alex Woodhouse's dunk with 36 seconds left which produced the 61-61 tie, and Woodhouse went to the line after being fouled on the play. The free throw was no good and Jamaal Douglas grabbed the rebound for the Leopards.
Lafayette called timeout with 22 seconds left to set up the final play. Marcus Harley drove right off a high ball screen and went to the goal, drawing contact while shooting with six seconds left. Andrew Zidar led Colgate's 3-on-1 fast break the other way, and Betley chased down Reed to make him earn it from the line.
Trailing 32-23 at the half, Lafayette went on a 14-2 run to start the final 20 minutes. Douglas, who scored seven points in the stretch and 18 in the game, and Pat Betley both hit buckets, and Jamaal Hilliard had a pull-up jumper and hit a three to tie the game at 32 with 17:38 remaining. Following a Colgate basket, Douglas scored the next five points as his free throw finishing a conventional three-point play put the Leopards up 37-34. Andrei Capusan's three-point opportunity with 12:39 to play gave Lafayette a 40-35 lead.
Paul Cummins had a steal and one-handed dunk at the 12-minute mark which sent the Leopards into the timeout with momentum. Three minutes later, Douglas blocked a three by Zidar and Betley caught and pitched the rebound ahead in one motion. Douglas completed the play with an emphatic two-handed dunk that gave Lafayette its biggest lead of the game at 49-43.
Colgate led by as many as four after a basket by Zidar finished a 12-3 run and made the score 58-54 with 4:21 left. Harley came back with a three to slice the deficit to one, and put the Leopards ahead 59-58 with a layup with 2:39 to go. Jon Foss hit one-of-two at the line to tie the score with 2:00 left.
With the shot clock running down on Lafayette's possession, Zidar blocked a shot but Sean Knitter recovered the ball and hit a turning 10-footer to give Lafayette a 61-59 lead with 1:21 remaining. Woodhouse had an offensive rebound off a missed three by Zidar and later scored to create the final tie.
Colgate ran out to a 29-17 lead and held the Leopards scoreless for a four minute stretch before Knitter and Cummins hit back-to-back three's which brought Lafayette within 29-23 with 1:39 to play until halftime. Colgate went into the half with a 32-23 lead after Roemer made a jumper with a second left.
Douglas had 18 points and 11 boards for his fifth double-double of the season, and Harley made three triples and a layup to finish with 11 points. Knitter produced nine points and seven rebounds. Betley didn't score but had nine rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block.
Jon Simon had 11 and Woodhouse and Reed netted 10 each for Colgate. Zidar had five points and nine rebounds.
Lafayette will make its final multiple-game road trip of the season next weekend with stops at Holy Cross on Friday, Feb. 11 and Army on Sunday, Feb. 13.
