EMMITSBURG, Md. - The Lafayette baseball squad split a Saturday doubleheader at Mount St. Mary's. In the opener, Rob Fioretii and Ian Law both recorded 3-for-4 performances and Matt Revelle earned his third win of the season in a 6-1 decision. In game two, Stephan Fay hit two home runs to lead The Mount to a 6-3 win.
In the first game, Lafayette (6-7) scored five runs over the first three innings to run away to the 6-1 win. Freshman Tom Hayes led of the second inning with a single and later scored when classmate Tyler Zeronda drove him in with a sac fly. Lafayette led 2-0 after the top of the third. Senior Rob Fioretti ripped a double to left, and clean-up batter Mike Raible plated him with a single.
The Leopards broke the game open with three runs on six hits in the top of the fourth. Matt Skellan, James Conrad and Ian Law (3-for-4) all drove in runs, and in the process, knocked Mount St. Mary's starter Dustin Pease (1-1) from the game.
Leading 5-1 in the top of the sixth, Lafayette tacked on an insurance run on a Fioretti single. He finished the game 3-for-4 and was one of six different players to drive in runs in the game.
Revelle earned his third victory of the season to improve to 3-1. He tossed his third complete game in four starts, striking out six while scattering eight hits on two walks.
In the second game of the Saturday twinbill, Mount St. Mary's (3-6) scored five runs in the third and fourth innings to hang on for a 6-3 victory.
The game was scoreless until the third inning when Lafayette plated two runs in the top of the frame. With two outs and Dave Drechsel on first, Conrad roped a double to center to score Drechsel. Law then knocked in Conrad with a single to give Lafayette a 2-0 lead.
Mount St. Mary's scored three runs aided by two Lafayette errors in the bottom of the inning. Joseph Hayes brought in two of the runs with a two-out double to left center.
The Mount padded its lead to 5-2 with two runs in the home fourth. Fay bagged a lead-off home run and Matt Eiden singled in another. The Eiden single brought Matt Kamine into the game to relieve Lafayette starter Brian Cope.
Lafayette cut the lead to 5-3 in the sixth. Sophomore Frank Cortazar doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a fielder's choice from Nick Benvenuto.
Mount St. Mary's answered with Fay's second home run of the game, a solo shot that put the final at 6-3.
Cope (0-1) took the loss, giving up five runs on five hits over 3.1 innings. Kamine surrendered one run on one hit over 2.2 innings. Brian Perkins was credited with the win. He gave up two runs on five hits in 3.1 innings.
Lafayette and Mount St. Mary's will play the rubber game of the three-game series on Sunday at noon.
