ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Lafayette baseball team split a doubleheader with Navy in the Leopards' second conference weekend of the season. Lafayette scored four runs in the sixth inning and used a complete game from Matt Revelle to claim a 5-1 victory in the opener. In the second game, Lafayette held an early 2-0 advantage, but Navy plated a run in the eighth to hand Lafayette a 3-2 defeat.
As the day opened, Lafayette had its ace, Revelle, on the mound. Playing in his home state, Revelle (4-3) tossed all seven innings and allowed just one run on five hits. He struck out seven and walked one.
The Leopards' offense scored all of the runs it would need in the sixth inning. Trailing 1-0, Lafayette (11-19, 1-5) posted four runs. Three straight singles, the final one by Ian Law, tied the game at 1-1. With the bases loaded Adam Bucci, singled home two more runs. Mike Raible connected for another one of the Leopards' five hits in the inning and knocked home the final run.
A single proved to be enough to add an insurance run in the seventh when Rob Fioretti plated Tyler Zeronda to run the final to 5-1.
In game two, Lafayette struck first with two runs in the second inning, but saw Navy (9-22-1, 4-6) chip away at the Lafayette advantage throughout before finally scoring a run in the eighth to record a 3-2 victory.
In the second inning with the bases loaded and one out, Zeronda drove home the Leopards' first run with a sac fly. James Conrad (3-for-4) put the Leopards ahead 2-0 with a bases-loaded single.
Navy scored runs in the fourth and sixth innings off Lafayette starter Matt Kamine. Trevor Thompson led off the fourth with a solo home run. Thompson then scored again in the sixth inning, reaching home via a Doug Silverman RBI-single to right.
Navy plated the game-winning run in the eighth inning, and again it was Thompson (3-for-4) who touched home. Ryan McGinn lined a single back up the middle to drive in Thompson from second for the game-winner.
The Leopards put up a valiant effort to tie the game in the top of the ninth. Frank Cortazar led off the inning with a hit as part of his 3-for-4 day and Lafayette eventually put runners on first and second with one out before Navy reliever Tom Van Dam came on to retire Conrad and Fioretti to end the game.
Kevin Heasley (1-0) collected the win after throwing part of the eighth and ninth innings while Van Dam got the save. Kamine turned in a strong effort, throwing all eight inning while allowing three runs on nine hits while fanning seven.
Lafayette and Navy conclude their four-game series on Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for high noon.
