Leopards Suffer 75-60 Setback at Army

Jan. 25, 2006

Box Score

WEST POINT, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - Army gained control of the contest with a 15-2 run that started at the midpoint of the first half and led by at least 10 points throughout the second for a 75-60 win over Lafayette in Patriot League women's basketball on Wednesday night at Christl Arena.

Stefanie Stone entered the night ranked first in the league, shooting 61.8 percent from the field, and was 8-for-11. She finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Cara Enright, the league's leading scorer, padded her total with a 20 point night. Army improved to 5-1 in the Patriot League, and 11-8 overall.

Lindsay Myers set career-highs with 10 made free throws on 11 attempts from the line and scored 18 points for Lafayette (6-12, 1-4 PL).

The Leopards led 18-16 with 12:24 left in the first half as the starting five executed the offense with precision. Kristin Doherty had seven points on a three-pointer, a jumper and a pair of free throws, while Lindsay Myers got to the line for four free throws and Vanessa Van De Venter scored a pair of buckets.

From there, two events conspired to give the Black Knights the impetus for their game changing run. First, Myers, playing the `power forward' spot in Lafayette's four-guard set, picked up her second foul with 12:07 left. A minute and a half later, Emily Garner was hit with an elbow while battling for an offensive rebound, and Stone made layup at the other end to put Army ahead by four. The freshman forward did not return.

With Lafayette down to one of its top four rebounders (sophomore forward Brittany Purr is sidelined by illness), Army dominated the interior and ran off nine straight points to go ahead 31-20 with 3:21 left. A basket by Val Gomez with 8:00 on the clock was the Leopards' only score in a stretch of 9:37 before three field goals in the final minute brought Army's lead within single digits (36-28) at the break.

The Black Knights scored the first six points of the second half and maintained an advantage that fluctuated between 12 and 19 the rest of the contest.

Myers scored 12 of Lafayette's first 14 points in the second half until Van De Venter made a layup with 7:39 left. Lafayette's leading scorer finished with 13 points.

Army held a 46-27 advantage on the glass and was 14-of-28 from the field in both halves. Lafayette won the turnover margin for the fifth straight game, 19-15, but was only 21-of-59 (35.6 percent) from the floor.

The Leopards were 14-for-16 from the foul line, nearly replicating their 15-for-16 performance at the stripe at Christl Arena a year ago.

Lafayette will travel to Washington, D.C. for a Patriot League tilt with American on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
