ANNAPOLIS, Md. - (www.lafayette.edu) - Four different players scored a goal for the Midshipmen, as Navy dealt the Lafayette women's soccer team a 4-0 loss on a windy Sunday afternoon at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
Battling a brisk wind, both teams found it hard to establish momentum and rhythm early in the game. Lafayette hung with the first-place Midshipmen for nearly the entire first half.
However, at 43:26, Navy ended the first half on a tear. Midshipmen freshman Jen Grijalva found Sam Schroth who pulled Lafayette junior goalkeeper Mary Kate Erdman out of the goal, dribbled around her and kicked the ball into an open net for the game's first goal.
The Leopards were continued to be snake bitten by late first half goals when Navy added on a second goal less than a minute later. Kari Weniger served the ball to sophomore forward Kristen Laraway who took a high-arching shot from 25 yards out that went over an outstretched Erdman to give Navy a 2-0 lead going into intermission.
Brigitte Fox and Weniger tallied two second half goals to give the Midshipmen the 4-0 victory.
Navy led the Leopards 10-4 in shots on goal. Lafayette was led by junior forward Kelly Koreyva who tallied two shots on goal on the afternoon.
Erdman recorded six saves on the afternoon, while Navy goalkeeper Lizzie Barnes had three saves in just over 76 minutes of time. Beth Reed finished the game for Navy and recorded one stop during her time in goal.
The Leopards now return home and will prepare for their season finale against Army on Friday Oct. 27 at Mike Bourger '44 at Oaks Stadium. It will be Senior Night and celebrate the careers of seniors Jennifer Chamberlain,Carolyn Fisher, Kelly Fitzgerald, Kelli McMahon, and tri-captain Trista Burke.
