EASTON, Pa. - Junior thrower Osasumwen Izevbigie (Springdale, Md./Charles Herbert Flower) was named the Patriot League Female Field Athlete of the Week after a record-breaking performance at the Lafayette Invitational last Friday.
Izevbigie shattered Lafayette's women's indoor shot put record with a throw of 48 feet, breaking the previous record by seven inches. She now holds both the indoor and outdoor school records in the event.
"It was a great opening meet," said associate head coach Michele Curcio. "It's not like she peaked at the meet so she's still got some room for improvement."
The Government & Law major qualified in two events for the ECAC Championships, which will take place in Boston, Mass. on March 7-8 in two events at the team's season opener. In addition to the shot put, Izevbigie won the 20-lb. weight event on and surpassed the ECAC qualifying mark with her throw of 53'9".
"Her practices are going very well," Curcio said. "She's still learning how to throw the weight but she's having consistent practices at the shot put."
The Leopards will face their first Patriot League opponent on Jan. 12 when they visit West Point, N.Y. for the Army Invitational.
