EASTON, Pa. - Junior Osasumwen Izevbigie (Springdale, Md./Charles Herbert Flower) broke the women's indoor shot put school record on Friday at the Lafayette Invitational. The Leopards won seven events and had two ECAC/IC4A qualifiers as they kicked off their indoor season at Kirby Sports Center.
Izevbigie's throw of 48' qualified her for the ECAC Championships in Boston, Mass. on March 7-8 and shattered the Lafayette record previously set by Hope McCorkle in 1998 by seven inches. She also qualified for ECAC competition in the 20-lb. weight throw, scooping up her second win of the day with a mark of 53'9". Her throw beat her previous personal best of 51'1".
Sophomore thrower Connor McGee (Williamsport, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) took first place in the men's shot put with a toss of 52'2", beating his previous best by almost two feet. His throw earned him a chance to compete in the IC4A Championships in Boston, Mass. in March.
Freshmen sprinters Asia Hollis (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) and Janica Austin (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Central) gave strong performances in the women's 60-yard dash, finishing first and second with times of 7.26 seconds and 7.31 seconds, respectively. Senior Jessica Buzzell (Milton, N.H./Spaulding) also advanced to the finals and placed sixth.
Lafayette ran well in the middle distance events with Leopards sweeping the top three spots in both the men's and women's 880-yard dash. Senior Brittany Waldron (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) finished the race in 2:24.65 to capture the women's title. Freshman Margaret Bruno-Metzger (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater Raritan) took second with a time of 2:24.86 and Stephanie Westerman (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) came in third place (2:25.04).
On the men's side, senior Brian Vail (Portland, Maine/Deering) won the 880-yard dash with a time of 1:56.93. Senior Aaron Buchman (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) came in second (1:57.77) followed by sophomore Matthew DeBlander who finished third in 1:59.80.
Senior Meaghan Darling (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro Central) was the final Leopard to win an event at the Invitational. Her time of 27.36 seconds was good enough to grab the women's 220-yard dash title to give Lafayette its seventh win of the day over opponents from East Stroudsburg and St. Joesph's University.
The Leopards will face their first Patriot League opponents when they return to action on Jan. 12 at the Army Invitational in West Point, N.Y.
