KISSIMMEE, Fla. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette softball team closed its spring break trip to the Rebel Spring Games with a pair of losses on Friday, falling 4-0 to Mississippi Valley State and 6-2 to Wagner. The Leopards will return home with a 5-5 record before returning to action on Tuesday at St. Joseph's.
Freshman pitcher Nikki Stouder shut out the Leopards in the first game of the day, scattering four hits over seven innings. The Devilettes scored once in the first on a sacrifice fly, and then put together a three-run inning using two hits, a walk and an error in the third to account for the scoring.
Lafayette senior pitcher Megan Averbuch allowed five hits on the day and fell to 2-3 with the defeat.
Leadoff hitter Natalie Stephens (2-for-3, 2 runs) and number three hitter Katie Stevens (2-for-4) did most of the damage for Wagner against the Leopards. The Seahawks plated single runs in the second and third, sent three across in the fourth, and then added an insurance run in the sixth to go ahead 6-0.
Lafayette's scoring came with two out in the sixth, as Jessika Smith had a pinch-hit double and scored on a single by Michelle Ellis, who advanced to second on the throw. Robyn Matchett drove Ellis in with a single before Wagner retired the side to improve to 3-4 on the season.
