LEWISBURG, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette won for the third time in as many days at Bucknell on Monday, concluding the series with a 5-2 victory that gives the Leopards a 3-1 Patriot League record through the first weekend of play.
Patriot League Player of the Week Kristen Ruckno set the tone early with an RBI double in the first to complete a series in which she hit .500 (7-of-14) and drove in five runs.
The Bison answered with a run in the bottom half, but the Leopards went ahead for good with two runs in the second. Sarah Price had an RBI double of her own, scoring Allison LoBello, to give Lafayette a 4-1 lead through three innings.
LoBello threw out a potential base stealer at third to end the fourth inning and thwart Bucknell's best scoring chance until the final frame, and also added an RBI single in the seventh to give Lafayette a 5-1 lead.
Senior pitcher Megan Averbuch allowed just four hits, all singles, after the first inning until Cassie Lloyd led off the seventh with a home run. Ashley Beans followed with a single and Lafayette head coach Jeanine Gunther turned to freshman Aimee Dassner, who retired three of the four batters she faced to earn her second save of the season.
Averbuch leveled her record at 4-4 for the Leopards, giving up two earned runs in six innings, and struck out five. Meg Muirhead took the loss for Bucknell and fell to 0-2.
Lafayette will travel to St. Peter's for a doubleheader on Wednesday, and then prepare to take on Lehigh in a four-game set in Bethlehem. Both schools will enter the weekend with a 3-1 record in Patriot League play.
