PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Lafayette field hockey traveled to face Penn and fell, 1-0, in the Quakers' home opener at Franklin Field.
Penn came out strong in the opening minutes of the game in search of its first victory of the season. The Quakers were unable to capitalize on two penalty corner opportunities in the first half.
Senior Courtney Dixon made the initial save on the Penn's second penalty corner attempt, but the Quakers' collected their own rebound to take another shot. They were unable to score as junior Jaclyn DiSanti stopped the ball, keeping the game, 0-0.
On the rush, senior Kara Bolger put the Quakers ahead, 1-0 with 6:25 remaining in the first.
Spending more time in the Quakers' end, the Leopards increased their offensive efforts, registering three shots in the second half.
Several scoring opportunities for Lafayette were not enough to tie the game as junior Maggie Condon and sophomore Alison Schoch registered shots on the Penn goalkeeper.
Several key moves by the Lafayette defense and six saves by Dixon kept the Leopards in the game. Dixon made a kick save in the waning seconds to keep the game tight until the end.
"We struggled in the first half and in the second half we played much better, but it was too late. Penn played better than us today and they deserved the win," head coach Andrew Griffiths said.
The Leopards (3-2) return to action and to Philadelphia when the team travels to La Salle for a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.
