BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Lafayette women's soccer team endured its third straight overtime game and outlasted Long Island University on Friday evening when senior Kelly Koreyva put an unassisted 94th minute goal into the back of the net for a 2-1 non-conference victory.
The winning goal was set up on a turnover off of an LIU throw-in when Koryeva corralled the loose ball and with the Blackbirds goalkeeper out of the net, fired a shot to the far side of the goal giving the Leopards a 2-1 win.
Head Coach Mick Statham was very happy with the Leopard effort in the victory, but knows the team will only have a few hours to enjoy the triumph.
"This was a very good win for us," Statham said. "This was a difficult place to play due to the field and the environment but mentally we stayed very strong and did enough to win. I thought both goals were excellent. Caroline's goal was typical Caroline, and Kelly's goal was as crafty as they come. The back four adjusted well and Brittany Futterknecht earned her first college win. When we wake up tomorrow though we have to move on and prepare for Cornell"
Lafayette got on the board first in the 19th minute after Caroline Tuttle picked up a ball in front of the LIU net and fired a shot from 18 yards out that deflected off the far post and in for a 1-0 lead. The Blackbirds fought back and drew level at the 29:26 mark when Samantha Post sent a through ball into the area for Kayleigh Morgan. Morgan beat Lafayette senior goalkeeper Mary Kate Erdman to the ball and put a sliding shot into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
The Leopards looked primed to take the game in regulation, with their best chance coming with just under five minutes to play when Jacquelyn Marchese sent a shot from 25 yards out, but Long Island goalkeeper Felicia Amaral came out to make the save.
Lafayette will quickly get back into action when it travels to Cornell on Sunday afternoon. Kick-off is scheduled for noon in Ithaca, N.Y.
NOTES:
Koreyva's game winner was the second in three games for the senior Yardley, Pa. native. She also scored the game winner in overtime against Wagner last week.
Senior Brittany Futterknecht's second half appearance was the first of her collegiate career.
