EASTON, Pa. - In a very physical and entertaining non-conference match-up full of back and forth chances, the Lafayette women's soccer team failed to convert on several scoring chances and gave up two second half goals to fall to Manhattan 2-0 on Friday evening at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.
Christine Reina and Caroline Morse tallied goals for the Jaspers. Reina opened the scoring in the 60th minute when she received a pass through the Leopard defense from Courtney MacMahon and beat Lafayette freshman goalkeeper Brittany Futterknecht to the far post.
Morse's tally was a similar through-ball that found eyes over the Lafayette defense. Morse took a few dribbles and then beat Futterknecht to the far post to tally the game's two goals.
The Leopards had numerous chances in both halves. An early run in the opening minutes from senior Kelly Koreyva found freshman Mackenzie Moore streaking down the right sideline. Moore beat the Jasper defense, but sent the ball over the net.
Following a Futterknecht save off a Jasper breakaway, Lafayette countered with another chance of its own. Consecutive corner kicks followed by a free kick ended with Koreyva header going just over the goal in the 17 minute.
After a scoreless first half, the Leopards took the opening kickoff down the field. Koreyva found fellow senior classmate Caroline Tuttle streaking in the middle of the Jasper defense and forced Manhattan goalkeeper Alicia DeFino to make the save.
Lafayette continued its pressure with 37 minutes remaining in the game when freshman Kassidy Keller took a Koreyva pass over the Manhattan defense and found herself with a breakaway. Keller forced DeFino to make a diving save.
The ball rebounded back to Keller, as she took another touch and appeared to be sending the ball into the net until a Jasper defender made the save and kept the game scoreless.
Both goalkeepers had several crucial saves with Futterknecht talling five saves in her first collegiate start and DeFino stopping six Leopard shots. Manhattan held a slim 13-12 advantage in shots. Lafayette was unable to capitalize on seven corner kicks.
Head coach Mick Statham was disappointed his team wasn't able to find the back of the net.
"To be fair to Manhattan, they caused us a lot of problems with their speed and took their chances well," Statham said. "Goals change the face of games. We had our chances to change the game and we didn't. I think at the end of the day, they (Manhattan) deserved to win the game a little more than we did."
Lafayette will look to recover quickly as it will continue the four-game homestand on Sunday afternoon against Mount St. Mary's. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Mike Bourger '44 Field.
