WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Lafayette women's soccer team dropped its second decision in three days on Sunday afternoon, as American handed the Leopards a 3-0 defeat in Washington, D.C.
American finally broke the scoreless tie in the 35th minute of play. Lafayette sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Futterknecht's goal kick was intercepted about 30 yards from goal by Krystn Hodge.
Hodge dribbled to goal, outpacing the chasing Lafayette defense, and put the ball away to the far post for the 1-0 lead. Following the goal, Futterknecht and the defense were tested for the remainder of the first half, but were able to keep their squad down just one heading into intermission.
American grabbed an insurance goal 4:22 into the second half when Kelsey Brasher made a run to the right end line and sent a pass to through the mouth of the goal to find Brooke Sheppard for the score and give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles iced the game in the 68th minute when Brasher was rewarded for her assist with a goal of her own to give American the 3-0 victory.
Futterknecht grabbed three saves on the afternoon, while the Leopard offense forced two corner kicks in the American offensive zone.
Lafayette will return home to regroup and prepare for its annual showdown with archrival Lehigh on Saturday evening. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.
