LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Lafayette women's track and field team placed second at the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships at Bucknell on Sunday. With 146 points, they were just 27 points behind Patriot League Champion Bucknell. It the highest finish the women have had since 1992. The men moved up one spot from Saturday to finish sixth with 39 points, just 11 back from fifth-place American.
Head coach Julio Piazza was named the women's Coach of the Year at the awards ceremony on Sunday evening. Senior Kristen Kalinowski took home the women's Field Athlete of the Meet for her wins in the pentathlon and high jump on Saturday. Freshman Janica Austin nabbed the female Rookie of the Meet award after winning the 60-meter hurdles and scoring points in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes.
Austin's time of 8.67 in the hurdles broke the school and Patriot League meet records she set on Saturday during the semifinals. She placed third in the 60-meter dash (7.81) and fourth in the 200-meters (25.68). Freshman Asia Hollis edged out teammate Austin in the 60-meters, finishing in 7.76 for second place. She also ran with Austin in the 200-meters, where she came in fifth (25.92) to score two points for the Leopards.
Sophomores Kyle Clayton and Will Braswell represented Lafayette in the men's sprints. Clayton won both the 60 and 200-meters to tie Kalinowski with two Patriot League Championship titles for the weekend. He broke the meet record on Saturday in the 60-meters (6.86) before running 6.88 in the finals to capture the win. Braswell ran 7.0 flat to place fifth for the Leopards. The 200-meter race was a close one with Clayton edging out Bucknell's Kerry Boyle by just thousandths of a second.
In the middle distance events, senior Pete Reynolds ran 2:30.42 to finish in third. On the women's side, freshman Margaret Bruno-Metzger took third in the mile (5:05.95). The women's distance team of Christine Wittich, Allison Hawkey, Brittany Waldron and Bruno-Metzger ran the DMR in 12:26.12 to finish second .
Senior Emily Cholak came in third in the triple jump with a distance of 38'0", after placing third in the long jump on Saturday.
In the throwing events, junior Osasumwen Izevbigie broke the school record in the shot put for the second time this year with a throw of 48' 1¾" while becoming a Patriot League Champion in the process. She placed second in the weight throw on Saturday. In the men's shot put, sophomore Connor McGee (Williamsport, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) threw 51'0" for a fifth-place finish while picking up two points for the Leopards.
Select members of the track and field team will head to Boston, Mass. on March 7-8 to compete in ECAC/IC4A Championships.
