BRADENTON, Fla. - Miami-Ohio used a five-run eighth inning to hold on for a 10-6 win over Lafayette in non-conference baseball action on Monday.
The Leopards held the early lead thanks to a three-run home run by junior Jeff Butler (2-for-4) in the top of the second inning, his first round-tripper of the season. Lafayette extended that margin to 6-3 following the third inning. Senior Tom Ambrosole doubled in two runs and freshman Rob Froio drew a bases-loaded walk.
Miami responded with single scores in the fourth and fifth innings. Adam Weisenburger hit a lead-off home run in the fourth to cut the lead to 6-4 and J.D. Mynhier's RBI-double down the leftfield line sliced the Lafayette lead to 6-5.
That was where the score remained until the RedHawks broke out for five runs on five hits in the eighth inning. Evan Armitage plated three runs with a bases-loaded double that came with two outs. Jordan Petraitis followed with a two-run homer as Miami (3-10) pulled away.
Senior Nick Tucker finished the day 2-for-3 with two walks while Ambrosole went 2-for-4 with two doubles. The Leopards left 12 men on base for the afternoon.
Junior Ryan Hanna made his third start of the season, throwing 4.2 innings while allowing five runs (three earned). Senior Brad Woodfield, who was the pitcher of record for the Leopards, surrendered three runs in 2.2 innings. Junior Brian Mostek finished out the game, tossing the final 1.1 innings while giving up two runs. Miami's Brandon Meister collected the victory.
Lafayette (6-5) closes out its Spring Break trip to Bradenton, Fla. With a 10 a.m. game vs. Saint Louis.
