EASTON, Pa. - Construction has begun at the Metzgar Athletic Complex to build a new home for Lafayette's track and field teams. An eight-lane outdoor track is being built behind Rappolt Field and adjacent to the team's throwing cages where the hammer and discus events will be held. The track is projected to be completed in the Fall of 2008.
The track will be NCAA standard size with designated areas for jumps and throwing events. The cost of the track is estimated to be close to $1 million and is considered part of the Fisher Stadium renovation program. Generous contributors including the F.M. Kirby Foundation and Bourger and Fisher families helped to move the track from the previously renovated football field to Metzgar, where it will have its own facility.
The new track and field facility is nearby the newly-renovated Kamine Varsity House to allow the team easy access to its locker rooms. The building, which was unveiled at the dedication ceremony on April 5, features state-of-the-art team rooms with furniture and flat-panel video monitors as well as internet access.
"We are very pleased that the construction of the new varsity track and field facility at the Metzgar Athletic Complex is now off and running," said athletic director Bruce McCutcheon. "Within the last year we have renovated the Kamine Varsity House, built a new softball stadium, renovated the infield at Kamine Baseball Stadium and we are underway with the construction of a state-of-the-art track & field facility. This has all been accomplished through the outstanding support of our alumni and friends and we cannot thank them enough."
