EASTON, Pa. - Preseason continued as scheduled for the Leopards on Wednesday morning at Fisher Field. The full pad practice began at 8:30 a.m. after starting the day with early film session. The fast paced practice showed the Leopards' progress in their execution and performance.
The Leopards' defensive backfield has been exceptional in terms of improving throughout camp and preparing for the approaching season. Seniors Marvin Clecidor and Nigel Bryant have taken on a strong leadership role early in camp. Clecidor enters the season as a third-year starter at cornerback where he was second in the Patriot League in passes defended (12) during his junior season. Bryant, who started all but one game in 2007, returns as the team's third leading tackler (53).
Defensive assistant Jon Carvin, who begins his second season with the Maroon and White, has looked to Clecidor and Bryant to set the tone during preseason camp.
"Marvin and Nigel have taken on a huge leadership role and have really helped the young guys make some strides early on," he said.
Lafayette also features a trio of junior defenders who have shown they are ready to contribute to a defense that that finished 15th in the nation in pass efficiency defense last season (108.3). Eric McGovern and Nick Oliver look to take hold of the free safety position whereas Carlos Lowe is projected to start at corner alongside Clecidor. Carvin has pointed to Lowe as a player who has had an outstanding camp thus far.
Lafayette continues tomorrow with team meetings in the morning followed by practice at 1:30 p.m. An intrasqaud scrimmage is scheduled for Aug. 19 at 7:15 p.m. All practices are open to the public.
