WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Lafayette men's and women's track and field teams competed in their first event of the New Year on Saturday at Army's Crowell Open. Junior Connor McGee won the shot put with a throw of 14.83m and placed seventh in the weight throw (14.22m).
Freshman Nick Henderson posted a personal best in the pole vault (4.25m) to place fifth. Junior Adam Ballester and freshman Nick DeRosa finished in the top five in the men's 400-meter dash with times of 52.34 and 52.71, respectively.
Junior Sifiso Takirambudde placed second in the men's 60m hurdles with a time of 8.48. Senior Jessica Buzzell also finished second in the women's 60m hurdles with a time of 9.42, just one-hundredth of a second behind first place.
The women pole vaulters had a good meet as Jennifer Kihm placed second with a jump of 3.05m and Kelly Hinkel placed third, also with a jump of 3.05m.
Freshman Joelle Neilson jumped her way to second place in the women's long jump with a 5.05m outing.
Senior Matt Shaia (1.89m) and sophomore Kerriann Borke (1.50m) both finished third in their respective high jumps.
Senior Vicky Melroy finished strong in both the weight throw and shot put. In the weight throw, she finished fifth (13.65m) and her 11.07m throw in the shot placed her seventh.
The Leopards return to action on Friday at the New York University Invitational. The event starts at noon.
