WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Lafayette men's soccer team saw its three-match win streak come to an end with a 2-1, double overtime loss at American on Saturday afternoon. In a game that saw both teams enter with perfect 2-0-0 league marks, it was the Eagles who came out on top.

With the score deadlocked at one-all and less than five minutes to play in the second overtime period, American's Mike Worden got past the Lafayette defense and found himself alone with a clear shot at the goal and put the ball past Lafayette goalie Andrew Pianko to end the game. Pianko finished the match with six saves in only his second start of the season.

The teams combined for 36 shots, 21 of which came from American (6-3-1, 3-0-0). Rookie Josh Brown scored his second goal of the season but it was not enough to propel the Leopards (7-3-1, 2-1-0) to victory. Freshman Blake Fink finished with a team-high four shots and sophomore Adam Allers added three.

The teams traded shots to start the game and with 33:29 on the clock, Brown played a long ball that was mishandled by American goalie Matt Makowski. Brown was then able to fire a shot from close range to give his squad the early, 1-0 advantage.

It seemed as if that would be enough to secure a Lafayette victory as the team remained ahead 1-0 with less than a minute to play in regulation. However, the Eagles' Nick Kapus connected on a free kick from 30 yards out that landed just past the reach of Pianko and into the back of the net.

That goal sent the game into overtime where the Eagles had three chances to end the game in the first extra session but all three of their shots missed their marks, forcing double overtime.

In that final overtime period, Pianko made a save on a shot by Alex Tilatti but could not come up with another save on Worden's shot at 105:09, thus allowing American to remain undefeated in league play.

Lafayette is back on the road Wednesday with a 7 p.m. game at Penn State. The Leopards return home next weekend for a 7 p.m. match against Patriot League opponent Colgate.
