EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette softball team couldn't generate enough momentum from its 2-0 start in conference play on Friday, dropping both games of Saturday's double-header against Army. The Leopards battled in a 5-3 eight-inning loss in the first game and fell in a 12-7 decision in the second game to split the weekend series.

Right fielder Robyn Matchett went 4-for-6 for the day, scoring a season-high three runs. Pitcher Kasey Karr hit three of Lafayette's season-high four doubles in the second game to go 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. She pitched a complete game in the first contest, striking out six and walking two, and threw for 2.2 innings in the following game.

In the first game, Army (11-20, 2-2) loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning but the Leopards (6-12, 2-2) managed to get out of the jam with just one run allowed. Kerry Griffin and Karr threw out two at the plate before Clara Navarro singled up the middle for an RBI.

The Black Knights headed into the sixth inning with a 2-0 lead, but Lafayette came alive in the bottom of the sixth. After Christina Giambrone drew a walk, Stacey Kushner doubled to send her home. Griffin singled though the left side and advanced to second on the throw while Kushner scored the tying run.

Although Giambrone would hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the eight - her sixth homer of the season - the Leopards could not match the three runs the Black Knights scored in the top of the extra inning.

In the second game, Army scored multiple runs in four of the first five innings. Facing an 11-3 deficit in the bottom of the fifth with two outs, Kristin Garganio saved Lafayette from a mercy rule.

With the bases loaded, Garganio pinch hit for Jessika Smith and doubled to center field, bringing in all three runs. Matchett scored Lafayette's lone run in the sixth inning, but the team's rally stopped there.

First baseman Kerry Griffin recorded a season-high 13 putouts during Lafayette's second game of Saturday's double header.

The Leopards head to Philadelphia for a double header against Drexel on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
