BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Several members of the Lafayette track and field team boasted an auspicious start to the outdoor season this weekend at Lafayette's eight-way meet, held at Moravian College. The men finished fifth overall while the women finished sixth.
Vicky Melroy won in the hammer, just missing the ECAC standard with a throw of 157' 1."
Two freshmen women made an impression in their outdoor debuts. Alana Taylor, also a Lafayette volleyball player, placed second in the javelin with a throw of 116' 11." Though classmate Sarah Welsh-Huggins finished sixth in the 1500 meter race with a time of 4:48.25, she just missed cracking into Lafayette's career top 10 finishes by two seconds.
Jessica Buzzell, Allison Hawkey and Kerry Taylor all finished third in their respective events. Buzzell ran the 100m hurdles in 15.13 seconds and Hawkey finished the 800m race with a time of 2:21.31. Taylor, who set the school record holder in the 3000m Steeplechase last season, finished with a time of 12:00.95 in the event on Saturday.
The women's 4x100m team of Kerriann Borke, Kyara Gray, Kelly Clyde and Buzzell finished third with a time of 49.75.
The men's relay teams put together strong finishes. The 4x100m team (Nick DeRosa, Adam Ballester, Bradley Williams and Kyle Clayton) placed first and the 4x400m team (DeRosa, Clayton, Ballester and Chris Pregler) finished second.
Ryan Stasiowski earned second in the 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 9:29.55 and Rob Blum continued his successful senior year, running the 800m in 1:56.68 for second place.
The Leopards excelled in the field events. Matt Crystal posted a personal best in the hammer, finishing fourth with a throw of 158'7." Triple jumpers Adam Jones (46'03 ¼") and Brad Williams (44'06 ¾") earned second and fourth, respectively. Seamas McGuire was second in the javelin (182'03") and Connor McGee finished third in the shot put (47'05").
Lafayette will host its second consecutive meet of the season when the Leopards meet archrival Lehigh for their annual dual meet on Saturday.
