BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lafayette softball team lost both games of its doubleheader at Lehigh on Saturday afternoon, falling 6-0 in the first game and 5-1 in the second contest.
Inclement weather pushed the first game's starting time back three hours, but the delay did not seem to faze Lehigh pitcher Lisa Sweeney. She limited Lafayette to four hits and struck out 10 batters in the first game.
However, Lafayette shortstop Christina Giambrone found a way past her, going 2-for-3 with one double.
The Mountain Hawks scored five of their six runs in the bottom of the third. After loading the bases, Lafayette pitcher Kasey Karr hit a batter with a pitch and then walked the next to bring in two runs. Alex Cueva and Carly Potock both singled to drive in three more runs.
The Leopards did not fare much better against the Mountain Hawks' pitching staff in the second game. Tiffany Curtis and Sweeney combined to strikeout 11 batters of the 31 they faced.
Freshman Gwen Turner went 3-for-4, including a triple in the top of the seventh that brought in Lafayette's lone run of the second game. She has now hit a triple in three of the Leopards' last four games.
Lafayette pitcher Ali Henry racked up a season-high 10 strikeouts in the second game. She held Lehigh to one run until the bottom of the sixth when the Mountain Hawks capitalized on costly Lafayette slip-ups. Of its four runs, Lehigh scored two on wild pitches and another run on an error by catcher Stacey Kushner.
In the top of the seventh, Emma Kline, who went 2-for-3 during the game, singled to right center in the leadoff spot. Turner tripled to bring her home but the Leopards left her stranded as the next three batters struck out.
Lafayette returns to the field on Sunday at 1 p.m. for another doubleheader at Kaufman Field.
