EASTON, Pa. - A pair of seniors were honored for their dedication and contributions to the Lafayette women's lacrosse before Saturday's non-conference contest against Longwood. Following the ceremony, seniors Kristin Ruminski and Emily Archibald did not disappoint, totaling five goals in a 14-12 loss to Longwood at Rappolt Field.
Longwood jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game before Ruminski found the back of the net and Margaux LeBuffe tally knotted the game at two at the 23:54 mark. Ruminski's goal was the 100th goal of her Leopard career.
A 3-0 Leopard spurt was capped by Julia Bateman before Longwood responded to tie the game at three with 20:38 remaining until halftime.
Archibald notched her first goal of the game to regain the Leopard advantage (4-3).
After the Lancers regained a 5-4 lead, the Leopards responded another three unanswered goal run. Meg Ohlmacher used a Ruminski assist before Ruminski and Lauren Brown tallied goals of their own to stretch the Lafayette lead to 7-5.
The Leopard offense went cold for the remainder of the first half and opening of the second half, while the Lancers took advantage with a 4-0 spurt between the 3:17 mark of the first half and 20:21 left in the second frame to grab a 10-8 advantage.
Erin Steel ended the Lancer run to cut the Lafayette deficit back to one (10-9) before Longwood jumped to its largest lead of the afternoon (12-9) with two goals capped off with 13:56 remaining in the contest.
Lafayette cut the lead back to two twice in the final 10 minutes, as the two seniors both led the attack. Ruminski's goal at the 7:52 mark cut the Lancer lead to 13-11 and an Archibald free-position tally made it 14-12 with 4:47 left in the game.
However, the Leopards would hit the post once and the Longwood defense held strong to escape with a 14-12 victory over Lafayette.
Leopard goalkeeper Emily Bjork notched 11 saves on the afternoon while Ruminski paced the Lafayette offense with three goals and an assist. Longwood outshot the Leopards 32-31.
Lafayette returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Villanova. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.
