LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Lafayette softball team powered its way to an 8-4 win against Bucknell before falling to the Bison, 7-2, in Saturday's doubleheader.
Kerry Griffin went 2-for-4 in the first game and her single to right field in the first inning drove in three RBI. Coupled with Gwen Turner's run, Lafayette built a lofty 4-0 lead in the first inning.
The Leopards continued its attack in the top of the second when Christina Giambrone homered for the seventh time this year, adding three more runs to take a 7-0 advantage. She is three homers shy from surpassing her team-best nine homeruns in 2008. The junior shortstop was walked three times in the second game.
Lafayette scored once more in the top of the sixth when Giambrone reached on a fielder's choice and sent home Robyn Matchett. Though the Bison would score two runs in the bottom of the sixth, the damage had been done and Lafayette claimed the 8-4 win.
Kasey Karr pitched a complete game, striking out five and walking three. In the second game, the Bison had far less trouble connecting, rattling off 16 hits and seven earned runs off pitcher Ali Henry.
In the first inning, Matchett, the leadoff hitter, walked and got things rolling by stealing second. Turner grounded out as Matchett advanced to third and Stacey Kushner's single up the middle sent her home.
Bucknell lit up the scoreboard with four runs in the first three innings while the Bison kept the Leopards scoreless. The offensive attack was highlighted in the third inning by Ashley Beans' fifth triple of the season, which drove in a run. In the next at bat, Pavlovich singled to send Beans home.
Lafayette looked as though it would snap out of its dry spell in the fifth inning. Pinch hitter Jessika Smith singled in the leadoff spot and Emma Kline pinch ran for her. Matchett advanced sacrifice bunted and Kline moved on to third once Turner grounded out.
Karr singled to send home Kline and the next two batters walked. With the bases loaded, Griffin struck out swinging to leave three runners stranded and end the inning.
Lafayette returns to the field for another double-header against Bucknell on Sunday beginning at noon.
