EASTON, Pa. - Three games were played on Sunday afternoon at the Metzgar Athletic Fields Complex. Following wins from the Lafayette field hockey and men's soccer squads, the women's soccer team capped off the perfect day with perhaps the most dramatic win, a 2-1 double overtime victory over Drexel.
Just over a minute into the second overtime, freshman Nicole Brownell corralled the ball on the right sideline inside the Drexel defense. With a Dragon defender on her, Brownell played the ball 10 yards back to an open junior defender Caitlin Kennedy.
Kennedy took a touch and placed a perfect ball into the Drexel six-yard box and found freshman Bridget Becker. Becker's header re-directed the ball and the Dragon goalkeeper to give Lafayette the dramatic 2-1 victory.
Drexel played most of the first 15 minutes in the Lafayette defense, creating numerous chances and shots in the opening minutes. However, the Leopards responded with a flurry of their own before the game saw a scoreless first 45 minutes.
Lafayette was again the aggressor to open the second half before Drexel answered and got on the board in the 51st minute to take the 1-0 lead.
From there, the Leopards took control. Following opportunities from freshman Jill Dozier, junior tri-captain Olivia Hawes and sophomore Dana Moyer, Hawes worked for the equalizer in the 83rd minute.
After her initial shot was saved, sophomore midfielder Natalie Stone saved the ball before going over the endline and found Hawes inside the Dragon defense for the one-touch goal to knot the score at one.
A scoreless eight minutes of regulation followed by 10 minutes of the first overtime saw each team with chances and opportunities.
After the second overtime whistle, it was Lafayette that took the ball down the field and capped off the evening with Becker's 101st minute goal.
The Leopards outshot Drexel 14-12 and freshman Lauren Smedley returned from injury to record several crucial saves, totaling seven on the afternoon.
Lafayette will enjoy its victory for the rest of the evening and Monday before preparing for a Friday evening game against Monmouth. Gametime is set for 7 p.m. at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.
