WEST POINT, N.Y. - Points were hard to come by for the Lafayette women's basketball squad as the Leopards suffered a 54-38 setback to Army on Wednesday night in West Point.
The 38 points were the fewest scored against a Patriot League opponent this season. Elizabeth Virgin was the only Leopard to reach double figures with 12 points.
After committing 14 turnovers in the first half, Lafayette (4-16, 2-4) had just three over the final 20 minutes. Army (9-11, 3-3), however, was able to score 18 points off those miscues and shot 41 percent from the field.
Both squads struggled to put points on the board in the early going with three turnovers in the first two minutes.
Lafayette took a 3-0 lead before back-to-back threes by Molly Yardley put the Black Knights ahead 6-3. Those baskets were part of a 23-0 Army run that spanned nine minutes and included 12 points from Erin Anthony, who finished with a game-high 22 points.
Melissa Downey snapped the streak with a long jumper at the five-minute mark but the Leopards trailed 32-11 with two minutes on the clock and went into halftime down 34-13.
While the Leopards easily surpassed their first-half scoring output with 25 points in the final period, the 21-point halftime deficit proved too large to overcome.
Virgin's layup eight minutes into the final half made it a 17-point contest (41-24). Lafayette did not pull any closer until LaKeisha Wright's jumper with two seconds on the clock marked the game's final basket in the 16-point decision.
Lafayette wraps-up the first half of Patriot League play on Saturday with a 2 p.m. game at American.
