EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette faced a tough test in the 14th-ranked Nittany Lions of Penn State and ultimately fell 19-5 on Wednesday afternoon at Rappolt Field.
Five different players scored for Lafayette (0-9), including three freshmen, but three Penn State players netted multiple goals and the team played stingy defense to come away with the win.
The Nittany Lions (5-3) held Lafayette to just 16 shots. Freshmen Addie Godfrey, Katie Leto and Victoria Maxon all scored goals as did senior Julia Bateman and sophomore Erin Steel.
Leopard goalie Emily Bjork made three saves in her 43 minutes of action. Haley Huffines played the final 17 minutes and recorded one save.
Penn State opened the game with 10 unanswered goals within the first 20 minutes. Godfrey broke the streak with Lafayette's first goal of the contest with 5:53 on the clock.
The Nittany Lions scored two more goals in the half's final four minutes to take a 12-1 lead at halftime.
Steel scored the first goal of second half after less than four minutes of play to make it 12-2.
Another Penn State run, this time a 4-0 stretch, upped the team's lead to 14 (16-2) with 10 minutes left.
Lafayette continued to put pressure on the Nittany Lions, scoring three of the game's final six goals, but the game was too far out of reach to make a real run at the lead.
The Leopards, in the midst of a three-game homestand, host Patriot League opponent Bucknell on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The game will be played at Fisher Stadium for the first time in program history. It also marks the team's Alumni Day celebration.
