NORFOLK, Va. - Lafayette third baseman Kerry Griffin and freshman Emily Noel scored the two runs needed for the Leopards, who won their opening game of the spring season, 2-1 against Norfolk State. Lafayette fell in its second game to Niagara, 6-4.
In the first game, Norfolk State's Meghan Ramsey scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third.
The Leopards (1-1) answered in the top of the fourth when Griffin singled up the middle to advance to first. Three batters later, Stacy Kushner reached first on a fielding error that advanced Christina Giambrone to third and brought Griffin home to tie the game at 1-1.
The next time Lafayette was at bat, freshman Emily Noel scored on a Kasey Karr double to give the Leopards a 2-1 advantage and the win.
Senior pitcher Kasey Karr pitched seven innings and struck out eight batters and gave up only one run.
In the second game, all four of the Leopards runs came in the fourth inning. Kristin Garganio scored Lafayette's first run off a Madeline Allen single to right field with the bases loaded. The next three runs batted in came from Stacey Dorn, Carly Feiro and Karr as Kushner, Jordan Parsons and Allen scored giving the Leopards a 4-2 lead.
Junior Christine Hilcken pitched 2.2 innings while Noel made her first colligate appearance behind the plate for 3.1 innings, both striking out a runner.
The Leopards will continue play tomorrow in the final day of the Norfolk State Tournament taking on Niagara and St. Bonaventure at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
