NORFOLK, Va. - Lafayette softball spilt a pair games on the second day of the Norfolk State Tournament. The Leopards took down Niagara, 5-4, in the early game but lost 11-6 to St. Bonaventure (5-7).

It only took one inning for the Leopards (2-2) to take an early 2-0 lead over Niagara. Senior Kasey Karr led off and hit the first home run of the young season. Two batters later, classmate Christina Giambrone homered to center field.

The Purple Eagles answered back in the top of the third, scoring three runs in the inning. Becky Zill hit a three run home run.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Leopards had two outs with Kerry Griffin at the plate. She singled to right field, bringing home Karr and Gwen Turner to give Lafayette a 4-3 edge.

Niagara (3-5) scored its final run off an error as Kayla Hines reached first on a throwing error, bringing home Zill and tying the game, 4-4.

The game-winning run came off a Giambrone double to bring home Karr and seal the win for the Leopards.

Karr picked up her second win of the season as she pitched all seven innings, striking out seven of Niagara's batters.

In the second game, Lafayette scored late in the third inning off a Giambrone single that brought home Karr and freshman Jordan Parsons.

Christina Garganio was the next batter up and hit a single to center field, to palte Giambrone. The three runs brought the Leopards within one, 4-3. Kushner, hit her first homer of the season.

The final two runs from Lafayette came in the bottom of the seventh, when Giambrone hit her second home run of the day, a two-run shot that scored Griffin.

Junior Christine Hilcken pitched three innings, while freshman Emily Noel threw for four innings with four strikeouts. Hilcken took the loss for the Leopards giving up three runs and three walks.

The Leopards' game against Rider on Wednesday has been postponed due to field conditions. Lafayette will travel to Osceola Fla. to play in the Rebel Spring Games from March 15 through March 19 when they are scheduled to play eight teams.
