EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette softball team split its two games against Iona on Thursday at Metzgar Fields. Iona took the first game 15-0 in five innings while the Leopards came back in the second game winning 4-2.
In the first game, Iona threw a no-hitter against Lafayette (9-10). The Gaels scored 12 runs in the third inning alone followed with three in the fifth.
Sarah Jackson pitched all five innings for the Gaels not giving up a single hit and striking out 10 Leopards. Kasey Karr pitched two innings in the loss, giving up seven runs.
Lafayette found its rhythm in the second game, Iona scored first off a Jodi Petersen single that brought Tessa Earley home, the Gaels lead 1-0.
The Leopards came back with a run of their own when Stacey Kushner doubled to right center. Kushner then advanced to third on a wild pitch before Kristin Garganio hit a sacrifice fly to right field bringing in Kushner for the tie, 1-1.
The Gaels (9-14) scored one run in the third when Petersen hit her second triple of the season to bring home Tierney Markou. Iona took a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Cody Kugler, first at bat, walked to first and advanced to third on two wild pitches. Karr followed with a walk, and then stole second. With Karr on second and Kugler on third, Kerry Griffin singled to right center for two RBI.
Freshman Jordan Parsons came up to plate and hit her second double of the season bringing home Griffin. The three runs gave the Leopards enough to take the game, 4-2. Karr pitched all seven innings in the win giving up two runs, and striking out nine batters.
The Leopards begin Patriot League play when Lafayette heads to West Point, N.Y. to take on Army for a weekend of doubleheaders, both beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
