WORCESTER, Mass. - The week did not start out on a positive note for the Lafayette baseball team which dropped its final two games against Holy Cross on Monday afternoon in Worcester, Mass.

The Leopards (7-25, 3-9) fell 6-2 in the first game of the doubleheader and fell by a similar score, 6-3, in the series finale.

Leadoff hitter Rob Froio went 3-for-8 on the day and Matt Fenster collected three hits in the first game, marking the only Lafayette players with at least three hits for the afternoon. The team had eight hits in each game but only two went for extra bases.

Lafayette fell on the short end of 6-2 decision in game one. Starter John Gentile pitched 5.1 innings and gave up all six runs, which came on six hits and three walks.

Holy Cross (17-16, 7-5) took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out solo shot off the bat of Matt Perry.

The Leopards countered with a run of their own in the second that scored in large part due to two Holy Cross errors, the second of which allowed Fenster to score.

Unfortunately, the Crusaders came right back and knocked Gentile around for four runs on five hits in the second inning. Alex Maldonado has a two-RBI single that made it 3-1 and Jack Laurendeau and John Sills both added RBIs to give their squad the 5-1 advantage.

Gentile settled down and did not give up another run until the sixth inning. The Leopards, however, were unable to do much against Crusaders starter Matt Shapiro. They managed to score another run in the fourth when A.J. Pisarri scored on A.J. Miller's two-out single through the right side.

Holy Cross tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on Perry's second RBI hit of the afternoon and Lafayette was retired in order in the seventh to end the game.

Lafayette grabbed another early lead in game two but three Leopard pitchers could not shut down the Crusaders in what resulted in a 6-3 Lafayette loss.

The Leopards went ahead 2-0 in the second on a RBI ground out off the bat of Bobby Fargnoli and a sac fly from senior Matt Hall.

Holy Cross scored six runs in the second inning off of starter Sean McGrath and reliever Jack Rems. McGrath only lasted through one out in the second inning and gave up four runs on four hits. Only one of those runs was earned, however, as two Lafayette errors helped lead to the six-run inning.

Maldonado, Laurendeau and Sills all came through with RBI hits, as did Stephen Wadsworth. Rems allowed the final two runs to score in the inning and Lafayette found itself facing a 6-2 deficit after only two innings of play.

The Leopards were able to scrape together a run in the fifth thanks to back-to-back leadoff hits by Brian Davila and Froio. Davila scored on Justin Shepherd's sac fly to make it 6-3 but the team went without another hit for the remainder of the game, making 6-3 the final score.

Lafayette is back on the road Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. game at Rutgers.
