DOVER, Del. - The Lafayette women's soccer team got on the board first in the opening half and able to keep Delaware State scoreless to pick up a 1-0 victory and move to 6-5 for the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Smedley picked up her fifth shutout of the season and ninth in her career. Tonight's shutout moves Smedley tied for the top spot in Lafayette for shutouts (5) in a single season, and second in career (9) shutouts.
Twenty-three minutes into the first half, Delaware State knocked the ball into its own goal as freshman Catherine Galgano took a shot to give Lafayette a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
The lone goal in the first half was enough for the Leopards to seal the win and go into Patriot League play with a winning record.
Both teams took 12 shots with Lafayette edging out Delaware State in corners 4-2. Smedley made seven saves while the Hornet's Courteney Haas picked up six.
"The team played well in difficult circumstances and showed their maturity with coming home with a win," said head coach Mick Statham.
The Leopards open up Patriot League play on Saturday afternoon when Lafayette travels to Holy Cross for a 3 p.m. match-up.
