EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette (5-11, 0-1) welcomes Colgate (1-13, 0-1) to Kirby Sports Center on Wednesday night. The last time the two teams met was in the Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinals on March 3, 2010 when the Leopards beat Colgate 73-65.
Senior forward Jared Mintz and junior forward Ryan Willen are moving closer to the 1000-point plateau. Mintz has 992 points and is looking to become the 36th player in Lafayette history to achieve the feat. Willen has 865 career points.
Lafayette opened Patriot League play with a hard-fought 70-65 loss at Holy Cross on Saturday. Tony Johnson's stat line stood out when the Leopards' go-to scorers struggled to get going. The 6-0 sophomore guard had two blocks, including one of 6-9 Andrew Keister, and added five assists and seven rebounds along with seven points and no turnovers. The Leopards' big three (Mintz, Jim Mower and Willen) were held to 26 points as Darion Benbow led the way with 13 followed by Nick Petkovich with 11 and Mintz with 10.
Colgate is searching for its first Patriot League victory and second overall win of the season when the Raiders come to Kirby Sports Center on Wednesday. Colgate's lone victory came Jan. 2, 80-61 over Longwood. The Raiders count guarantee game losses at Duke, Syracuse and Maryland in their 1-13 record, losing those games by an average of 55 points. Junior forward Yaw Gyawu, one of the most athletic players in the conference, is the team's leading scorer (12.1 ppg) and the second-best rebounder (4.8 rpg). Up front, he is joined by sophomore forward Brandon James (6.4 ppg, 4.8 rpg) and 6-10 junior center Nick Pascale (5.7 ppg, 6.1 rpg).
In the backcourt, the Raiders have had to deal with the loss of junior guard Mike Venezia (9.2 ppg) who has missed the last eight games. Senior guard Joe Hoban (9.6 ppg, 3.4 rpg) and sophomore Mitch Rolls (5.8 ppg, 2.3 rpg) fill out the starting lineup.
