The Lafayette track and field team competed at the Great Dane Classic on Friday at the NYC Armory. The Leopards were back in action the following morning at Lehigh for the Mountain Hawk Invitational and Multis.
At the Great Dane Classic, the pole vaulting duo of Michael Thompson and Nick Henderson continued their strong indoor season with fifth and seventh place finishes respectively. Thompson ended with a jump 15' 3" while Henderson top out at 14'9".
Senior Kelly Clyde and junior Adedayo Adu both had impressive performances in the 200m dash and 400m dash. Clyde posted a huge personal best with a time of 25.69 while Adu continued her personal best streak topping last week's best by running 59.19 this weekend. Clyde's time places her third all-time in school history while Adu's time is the eighth all-time.
Other Leopards with strong performances included Nick DeRosa in the 200m (22.59), Nick Hepp in the 400m (50.68) and Ryan Stasiowski in the mile run (4:18.49).
At the Mountain Hawk Invitational and Multis, the women's field athletes lead the way for the Leopards. Senior Kerriann Borke picked up a first-place finish in the long jump with a personal best of 18' 7 1/4". The jump moved Borke to second all-time in school history.
Just behind Borke was Joelle Neilson jumping 18' 1 1/4" for second-place finish in the long jump. Freshman Rachel Pena earned a second-place performance in the shot put with a throw of 38' 7 1/2".
The pole vault group once again posted some outstanding performances. Brooke Kohler and Rebecca Slotkin finished in a tie for third with jumps of 11' 1 3/4". Elise Buffinton was sixth at 10' 8". Stephanie Hazlett finished fourth in the five-event pentathlon with a score of 2,759 points.
On the track, Clyde continued her outstanding weekend leading the 60m trials with a personal best of 7.88. Her timed placed her eighth on the all-time list. Borke also had an outstanding 60m hurdle race in the trials running 9.31 and qualifying second for the finals.
Julian Delgado led the way for the men's team, with a long jump of 22' 4 ½" and taking his first collegiate win. Nick Orzol had a personal best in the triple jump (46' 1/2") to finish second. Matt Crystal earned a fourth-place finish in the 35lb weight throw (47' 11 1/4") and fifth in the shot put (42' 5 1/4"). Freshman Drew Williams finished sixth in the pole vault with a jump of 13' 7 1/4".
On the track, Jerome Rudolph made his collegiate track debut earning a third in the 60m dash with a time of 7.11. For the day, Lafayette had four other top six finishes on the track. Matt Piazza placed fourth in the 800m (2:00.80) while David Robinson also came in fourth in the 200m (23.28). Orzol clocked in a 8.90 in the 60m hurdles and finished fifth while Mike DiPietro earned a fifth-place finish in the 200m (23.45).
The Leopards will travel back to Lehigh next week for their annual Dual meet. The field events will start at 3:00 p.m. with track races starting at 4:30 p.m.
