EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette men's basketball team will close out its non-conference portion of the 2010-11 slate when it hosts Columbia on Wednesday night. Lafayette (5-9) is coming off a dramatic double overtime win at Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday when six Leopard players, including all five starters, reached double figures. Columbia has won four of its last five and sits at 7-5.
The Patriot League-Ivy League matchup will be televised lived by the Lafayette Sports Network (RCN 4 & 8) with Gary Laubach and John Leone calling the game. It will also be available on LSN All-Access through GoLeopards.com and on WJRH 104.9 with Dick Hammer recounting the action.
Junior guard Jim Mower has had the hot hand of late for the Leopards, scoring 13 points in the second overtime to lead Lafayette to a 98-92 victory at FDU on Sunday. Coming off a 21-point game at Gonzaga, Mower hit three three-pointers in the final five-minute period and finished with a game-high 28 points and career-high 10 rebounds for Lafayette's first double-double of the season and the first of his career.
The Lions are coming off a one-point loss at Elon on Jan. 2. Prior to that, Columbia had rattled off wins over Stony Brook, Wagner (77-71), Bryant and Maine. The Lions are 2-1 in games against Patriot League foes, beating Colgate (76-63) at home, winning at American (64-62) while losing at Bucknell (73-68).
Junior guard Noruwa Agho leads the way in the scoring department with 15.2 points per game. Sophomore backcourt counterpart Brian Barbour is chipping in 11.1 points per game while maintining a 2.4 assist/turnover ratio. Freshman guard Steve Frankoski is the Lions' main perimeter threat, connecting for 31 three-pointers while averaging 9.8 ppg.
Up front, senior forward Asenso Ampim is the team's leading rebounder (6.7 rpg), despite coming off the bench in all but one game. The native of Ghana is also contributing 8.6 ppg. Senior forward Brian Grimes (5.3 ppg 5.3 rpg) has started all but one game and has been alongside starting center Max Craig (5.3 ppg, 3.1 rpg), a 7-0 senior.
