WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Lafayette women's soccer team played Army to a scoreless draw on Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium. With the result, Lafayette (9-5-2, 4-2-1 Patriot) closes the regular season with 13 points in League play and enters next weekend's Patriot League Tournament as the second seed.
"First of all let me say how proud I am of the team's regular season effort," head coach Mick Statham commented. "I think it's a great achievement to qualify for the Patriot League tournament as the second seed. The players' goal today was to try to win the game and get three points to win the regular season, but Army played well. It was a terrific Patriot League game, both teams played hard, and at the end of the day one point is probably a fair result. We'll go into postseason play having given our best effort and we look forward to winning our first Patriot League Title."
Colgate (11-5-2, 4-1-2 Patriot, 14 points) will host the tournament in Hamilton, N.Y. and play Army (10-3-5, 3-1-3 Patriot, 12 points) on Nov. 4 at 5 p.m. Later that evening, Lafayette will entertain third-seeded Navy, who also has 13 points, at 8 p.m.
Lauren Smedley's goalkeeping was the story of the match for the Leopards, who were outshot on the day. Smedley made 10 saves to earn her eighth shutout of the season, and 20th of her career, moving her into a tie for eighth all-time in PL history with Army's Kristine Beardsley. The junior keeper also ties Lafayette's single season shutout mark, set by her last season.
Army's Monica Lee recorded her 13th clean sheet of the season, making three saves in the process. Lee's 13th shutout ties her for the most all-time in League history with Lizzie Barnes (Navy, 2006) and Annah Castellini (Army, 1993).
The Black Knights took six corner kicks, compared to Lafayette's four. Jill Dozier led the Maroon and White with two shots on goal.
Lafayette returns to postseason play for the first time since 2001 and seeks its first PL Tournament victory in program history.
