EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette (11-17, 6-7) closes out the regular season on senior day as the Leopards face American (20-8, 10-3). The Leopards are coming off a 67-46 lashing of Army on Wednesday to pick up their second series sweep of the season. American has won 13 in a row over Lafayette with the Leopards the last win coming in 2005 at Kirby.
Lafayette will honors its four seniors, Darion Benbow, Jared Mintz, Ben Wheeler and Deirunas Visockas, prior to tip on Saturday.
The Leopards have the greatest variation for any team heading into the final weekend, as they can still finish anywhere between the No. 3 and No. 6 seed in the Patriot League Tournament.
Lafayette is guaranteed a home game in the quarterfinals with a win over American. If they win, the Leopards would be the No. 3 seed if Holy Cross beats Lehigh and the No. 4 if the Lehigh take down the Crusaders.
Lafayette can still earn the No. 4 seed with a loss, but only if Lehigh beats Holy Cross and Colgate wins at Navy to create a tie between Lafayette and Holy Cross that would be broken by the Collegiate Basketball News RPI.
A loss to American, Lehigh win and a Navy win makes Lafayette the No. 5 seed, and so does a loss and wins by Holy Cross and Colgate. If the Leopards lose while Holy Cross and Navy both win, Lafayette would fall to the No. 6 seed.
The Eagles have wrapped up the No. 2 seed in the Patriot League Tournament via a 10-3 mark in conference play. American's only conference losses have come to Bucknell (75-60 and 66-60) and Navy (72-53 on Jan. 26). The Eagles earned the season split with Navy on Wednesday, winning 69-58.
Offensively, American is led by George Mason senior transfer Vlad Moldoveanu. The forward is averaging 19.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game and is coming off a 28-point, nine-rebound game at home vs. Navy. Joining him at forward is junior Stephem Lumpkins (13.0 ppg), the team's leading rebounder at 8.0 rpg.
In the backcourt, senior guard Nick Hendra is contributing 7.7 points and 4.1 assists per game while junior transfer (Georgia) Troy Brewer is averaging 11.0 ppg. Senior Steve Luptak (2.7 ppg, 1.4 rpg) also has started every game. Junior Simon McCormack (2.8 ppg, 2.6 rpg), junior transfer (Vanderbilt) Charles Hinkle (4.9 ppg, 2.3 rpg), and sophomore Daniel Munoz (3.1 ppg, 1.4 apg) all have played key roles in the American backcourt.
